Tankers continue to remove leachate from the east site at the leachate pumping station. The leachate is being removed off site to an approved receiver. The tankers operate daily Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
GFL continues to discharge the treated leachate into the west holding pond where it goes through the aeration process and then is discharged into the City’s sanitary sewer.
The deodorizer continues to operate at four locations on the Site: the holding pond on the west side, at the corner of Green Mountain and First Road, on the north buffer zone adjacent to Green Mountain Road and Morrisey Blvd., and by the pumping station.
GFL continues to perform ongoing perimeter inspections for odour detection.

A higher capacity carbon scrubber has been installed and is operating. Initial review shows that the new scrubber is more effective at treating odours at the leachate pumping station. All odours from the leachate treating system are treated through the carbon scrubber.
This week, no odours have been detected.
Tankers are being used to remove leachate from the east site at the leachate pumping station. The leachate is being removed off site to an approved receiver. Over 500,000 litres of leachate is being removed by tankers each week. The tankers operate daily Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

GFL Environmental had to delay pumping leachate until Wednesday November 1, 2023 from the West Holding Pond. While aerators will be running, the pumping may cause some odour. GFL will closely monitor the treatment process and will adjust where required.
October 27, 2023,
- GFL continues to perform ongoing perimeter inspections for odour detection. We have not encountered odours in the past week.
- The Carbon Air Scrubber that was put in place on October 13th continues to be effective at mitigating odour from the pump station. GFL is looking into a larger scrubber that will be even more effective.
- The deodorizer continues to operate at four locations on the Site: the Holding Pond on the West side, at the corner of Green Mountain and First Road, on the north buffer zone adjacent to Green Mountain Road and Morrisey Blvd., and by the pumping station. GFL has asked the vendor to replace the current deodorizer fragrance with an odour neutralizer. We are awaiting a response from the vendor as to options.

- A Carbon Air Scrubber has been put in place on October 13th, 2023 to help with odours at the Leachate Pumping Station with great success. The Scrubber is capturing and filtering the odours from the treated leachate. The Scrubber runs continuously.
- The deodorizer continues to operate at four locations on the Site: the Holding Pond on the West side, at the corner of Green Mountain and First Road, on the north buffer zone adjacent to Green Mountain Road and Morrisey Blvd., and by the pumping station adjacent to the strip mall development. Click the two links below to view product information.
- The exposed leachate within the landfill has been covered with soil at a depth of half metre, capping the exposed area and helping to mitigate odours.
- After assessing its effectiveness – in consultation with MECP – GFL ceased use of foam application on the Holding Pond.
- An Air Monitoring On-Site Assessment dated October 19th has been conducted by the MECP and reviewed by the City of Hamilton Public Health Services. The Assessment can be viewed here.

- We are continuing to apply the foam cover on the exposed area of the active landfill. Foam application will continue until the area is completely capped with soil. More information about the foam:
- 65% of the exposed surface area of the leachate blanket located on the East operating landfill has been drained and covered with soil and is dry. The dry areas produce no odour. The leachate is pumped below the collection blanket. The removal of the leachate in general is dependent on weather – with rain, the leachate volume increases.
- We are pumping leachate from the lowest point of the landfill every day around the clock.
- We have introduced Hydrogen Peroxide to further help mitigate the odours. As of the evening of Tuesday October 10th, the Hydrogen Peroxide is being dosed into the leachate outflow chamber to help further mitigate odours. This process is continuous.

October 6, 2023,
- This week, 40% of the exposed area that contained leachate is now dry and covered with soil. The intent is that the soil acts as a barrier to mitigate any further odours from the leachate collection area. This process will continue until 100% of the area is dry and covered. The remainder of the exposed area will continue to be covered in foam. GFL together with consulting engineers have been working continuously to enhance our treatment process. Early next week we will be making additional enhancements to the treatment system to mitigate odour. GFL will continue to monitor conditions at the site around the clock.
September 29, 2023,
- This week a foam was applied to all areas of exposed leachate at the landfill and at the leachate pond to mitigate odours. The foam is a non-toxic water-soluble material designed to trap odour. It will be reapplied as required to ensure all exposed leachate is covered. This product has been approved by the City and the MECP. We also continue to reduce the accumulation of leachate through pumping and treatment and run vapour deodorizers. GFL continues to work on a permanent solution to enclose the leachate treatment system.

September 8, 2023,
– In the past few weeks the GFL Stoney Creek Regional Facility has placed several vapour deodorizers strategically around the site to help control odour. GFL SCRF is also working on a solution to cover the exposed areas to mitigate odour while discharging landfill leachate.
August 24, 2023,
– The new treatment process introduced at the end of July has shown to be effective in reducing odour in landfill leachate. Periodically, odours are generated depending on the nature of the leachate and local weather conditions. GFL is continually monitoring the effectiveness of odour treatment and adjusting the process as necessary. We expect the effectiveness of the odour treatment to continue to improve as we monitor and adjust odour treatment.
July 31, 2023,
– By stopping pumping operations this has resulted in an accumulation of leachate within the landfill. The existing accumulation of leachate is causing odours. We expect the existing odour will reduce as leachate continues to be treated and removed from the landfill. GFL continues to work to treat leachate in a timely manner and manage the odour.
July 28, 2023,
- Odour issues at the Stoney Creek Regional Facility were identified. GFL determined that odours had originated from the leachate pond, and immediately shut-down pumping operations and began investigating further processes and technologies to address the odour.
July 26, 2023,
– GFL began implementing a new treatment process to address the odour at the leachate pond. Early assessment of the new processes indicates positive results in mitigation of the odours.
July 18, 2023,
– Odour issues at the Stoney Creek Regional Facility were identified. GFL determined that odours had originated from the leachate pond, and immediately shut down pumping operations and began investigating processes and technologies to address the odour. GFL discussed with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and the City of Hamilton of the odour issue and GFL’s plan to fix it.
The MECP and the City of Hamilton continue to closely monitor GFL’s progress.
If you detect any odour coming from the facility, please call GFL at 1-800-567-7455. GFL is available 24 hours a day.
GFL will update this page as we continue to work towards addressing the odour issues.
